A qualified HI Coach can support organisations that want to develop and manage their premises sustainably or prepare for the HI labelling process.
The support can be adapted to the organisation’s needs, the conditions of the premises and how far the work has progressed. An HI Coach can contribute from the initial assessment through to the compilation of documentation for independent verification.
When can an HI Coach provide support?
An HI Coach can contribute at different stages and in different types of assignments.
Feasibility studies
During a feasibility study, the HI Coach can help the organisation define which premises are to be included, assess the current situation and identify which functions and stakeholders need to participate in the process.
The feasibility study can also provide an initial overview of:
- which criteria the organisation already meets
- what supporting information is available
- which assessments and inventories need to be carried out
- where working practices or documentation need to be developed
- what roles the property owner and other stakeholders need to have
Pilot projects
Organisations and property owners that want to start on a smaller scale can carry out a pilot project in selected premises.
The HI Coach can help define the scope of the project, plan the work and evaluate the experience gained. The pilot project can then provide a basis for developing working practices that can be applied to additional premises.
Inventories
An HI Coach can support or coordinate inventories of:
- premises and how they are used
- fixed interiors
- furniture and other furnishings
- alterations that have been carried out
- available documentation
- climate data and other relevant product information
The inventory provides a basis for further assessment, management and a possible HI labelling process.
Workshops
Workshops can bring together the functions involved in the process, such as premises managers, sustainability managers, purchasing teams, operational representatives and property owners.
An HI Coach can plan and facilitate workshops covering areas such as:
- the organisation’s needs and use of the premises
- allocation of responsibilities
- current working practices
- opportunities for improvement
- priorities and next steps
- how the organisation can work with the HI label over time

Documentation
The HI Coach can help the organisation identify, structure and compile the documentation required.
This may include:
- policies and procedures
- premises analyses
- inventories of furnishings
- management plans
- information about energy and technical systems
- information about fixed interiors
- climate data and calculation documentation
The organisation remains responsible for ensuring that the information is relevant, reliable and suitable for verification.
Preparations for verification
Before verification, the HI Coach can help the organisation review the supporting information, identify any need for additional documentation and establish a clear structure for reporting.
The HI Coach cannot decide whether the criteria are met or guarantee that the organisation will be approved. Independent verification is always conducted by the verification body.
”Interiors, including the successive layers of tenant fit-outs carried out over the years, account for a significant share of a building’s total environmental impact over its lifetime. This is what makes the HI label so important.”
– Santhi Felldin, Interior Architect SIR/MSA
Building the organisation’s own capabilities
An HI Coach assignment can have a broader purpose than completing a single HI labelling process. The work can also help an organisation or property owner gradually build its own knowledge and working practices for sustainable premises.
This may involve developing:
- the ability to apply the HI label to additional premises and projectsr.
- clearer responsibilities and internal roles
- recurring procedures for inventories and documentation
- working practices for premises planning and alterations
- procedures for purchasing, waste management and the management of furnishings
- a shared framework for collaboration between tenants and property owners
What does it mean to be a qualified HI Coach?
A qualified HI Coach has completed the Hållbar Interiör HI Coach training programme and gained in-depth knowledge of:
- the structure and process of the HI label
- the Criteria Document and how it is applied
- the organisation’s preparations for verification
- inventories and documentation
- fixed interiors and furnishings
- climate data and climate impact calculations
- the use of the digital tool Hint
The qualification confirms that the individual has completed the training and its required components. It does not mean that the HI Coach is employed by Hållbar Interiör or represents the verification body.
Advisory support and verification are separate
The HI Coach can support the organisation with criteria, assessments, inventories and documentation. The HI Coach does not conduct the independent verification.
The verification body is responsible for:
- reviewing the organisation’s documentation
- assessing whether the criteria are met
- conducting site visits
- issuing a verification statement following successful verification
This division of responsibilities ensures that advisory support and independent verification remain separate.
